    Volunteer

Project ASTRIDE is a 100% volunteer organization.

In 2017, we had  61 active volunteers helping out in various ways, both at the barn during our program sessions and also in several "out-of-the-barn" events as well as doing many behind the scenes tasks (including behind the computer). Together, we recorded almost 2,000 hours of volunteer time.  Contact us today if you want to be part of the fun. Without our volunteers, Project ASTRIDE would not exist!

    Potential Volunteers:

Why should you volunteer? Our volunteers are proud to be a part of the program. It is so rewarding to participate, and fun too! It's easy to apply and training is minimal but required. Our most popular - and needed - positions include:

    • Leader - A leader's first responsibility is the horse, but they must also consider the sidewalkers, making sure there is enough room along the arena wall and obstacles for them to pass safely. The leader retrieves their horse from the pasture, assists in grooming, and is in charge of the care and safety of their horse.

    • Sidewalker - usually get the most hands-on duties in therapeutic riding. They are directly responsible for the participant. As such, they have the capability to greatly enhance the lesson.

    • Tack - this volunteer's responsibilities include bringing in the proper equipment for the class' horses and participants, such as saddles, pads, lead ropes, bridles, helmets, grooming kits, treat buckets, helmet spray, name tags, and bug spray. Tack volunteers may also participate as sidewalkers as they complete the same training program as sidewalkers.

    • Arena - responsible for setup and teardown of the riding arena to simulate riding experiences such as trail riding and showing.

Maybe you've never touched a horse and never really want to? That's okay, we have the perfect job for you, too! As a greeter, grant writer, board member, photographer, or event coordinator your contributions to Project ASTRIDE are equally as important.
